Where the earnings came from

The Utility business did the lifting. It earned $1.08 billion, or $2.28 per share, against $810 million, or $1.79 per share, a year earlier. By OptimistFi's calculation, that is a 33.2% increase in Utility earnings.

Parent Other lost $139 million, or 29 cents per share, against a loss of $117 million, or 26 cents, a year earlier. The filing blames higher interest expense.

At the Utility, operating revenue less fuel, purchased power and other regulatory items added 76 cents per share. Electric volume and weather added 33 cents, retail electric price another 33 cents, and return on construction work in progress 9 cents. Other income added 10 cents.

Higher other operation and maintenance expense cost 10 cents. The filing points to vegetation maintenance and a larger scope of work at power plants, including during outages.

Demand supports the volume gains. Total retail sales rose 7.4% in gigawatt-hours, or 4.5% adjusted for weather. Industrial sales grew 4.9%, driven by data center and primary metals customers. Weather-adjusted residential sales rose 6.1%.

How much weather mattered

Weather flattered the comparison. Entergy estimates it added $116 million to earnings, or 24 cents per share, against $28 million, or 6 cents, a year earlier.

That 18-cent swing accounts for 18 of the 45 cents by which per-share earnings rose. Price actions and weather-adjusted sales growth account for the rest, along with other items in the filing's variance table.

The financing bill

Financing costs rose. Higher interest expense cost 19 cents per share across the company, 13 cents at the Utility and 6 cents at Parent Other.

The filing ties the Utility increase to higher debt balances, higher average interest rates and higher carrying costs on customer advances. It ties the Parent Other increase to $1.3 billion of junior subordinated debentures issued in Nov. 2025 and $1.5 billion issued in Aug. 2026.

A larger share count cost another 9 cents. Diluted average shares reached 474 million, up from 454 million, mainly because equity forwards settled in Oct. 2025, Feb. 2026, June 2026 and Sept. 2026.

Total debt was $34.94 billion at Sept. 30, up from $30.56 billion a year earlier. Cash rose to $4.21 billion from $1.52 billion, and commercial paper fell to $105 million from $1.40 billion.

Return on equity for the 12 months ended Sept. 30 was 11.2% as reported, down from 11.4%. Funds from operations to adjusted debt held at 16.8%, unchanged from a year earlier.

Why it matters

OptimistFi has argued that Entergy's stock works if rising power demand and infrastructure investment are recovered through state regulation, without storm, financing or affordability costs overwhelming returns. The quarter strengthens that view on demand and recovery.

On recovery, the Louisiana Public Service Commission approved Entergy Louisiana's $1.2 billion Babel to Webre transmission project. Entergy Arkansas announced an expansion of its service agreement with Google. Entergy Mississippi filed to securitize costs tied to Winter Storm Fern.

The caveat is the quality of the quarter. Weather and higher retail volume helped, so the jump may overstate the underlying run-rate. Rising interest expense, more shares and a trailing return on equity two-tenths of a point lower show where pressure is building.

What's next

Entergy scheduled its earnings call for 10 a.m. Central Time on Nov. 2, with a telephone replay available through Nov. 9. The next test is Entergy's next quarterly report.

Two items to track are weather-adjusted retail sales growth and interest expense. Together they show whether earnings growth holds without a weather lift.

Entergy Louisiana has filed for additional Future Ready resilience plan investment, and Entergy Mississippi has filed to securitize Winter Storm Fern costs. Regulatory decisions on those filings would test the recovery side of the case.
