What happened
Baytex Energy Corp. (NYSE: BTE) raised its 2026 exploration and development spending guidance to C$665 million and lifted its growth targets through 2029.
The company announced the changes in its third-quarter results release dated Nov. 5. The new figure is C$40 million, or 6.4%, above the C$625 million Baytex guided before. The money goes to faster Duvernay, heavy oil and enhanced oil recovery development. Baytex does not expect the extra spending to add production in 2026, so the payoff comes in 2027 and later.
The quarter ran in line with the full-year plan. Production was 71,606 boe d, 89% oil and NGL and up 5% from the third quarter of 2025. Adjusted funds flow was C$332 million, net income was C$160 million and exploration and development spending was C$186 million.

The growth plan in numbers
The plan pairs bigger budgets with faster growth targets. For 2027, Baytex guides to average production of 76,000 to 79,000 boe d, which is 7% to 11% annual growth, on spending of C$775 million to C$850 million. It expects 83,000 boe d in the fourth quarter of 2027, 15% above the fourth quarter of 2026. About 60% of the 2027 program falls in the second half of the year.
From 2027 to 2029, the outlook calls for 8% to 10% annual production growth to 92,000 boe d in 2029. Spending would run at about C$800 million a year. Baytex says the 2027 plan reaches its sustaining-capital breakeven target of WTI US$50 a barrel, because of lower costs and better capital efficiency.
The Duvernay sets the faster timetable. Baytex now expects 25,000 boe d there in the second half of 2028, one and a half years earlier than the previous plan. It plans 21 wells onstream in 2027 versus 13 in 2026. About 40% of 2027 capital goes to the field.
Third-quarter Duvernay production was a record 12,806 boe d, up 26% from the third quarter of 2025. Drill and completion costs were C$930 per foot of completed lateral, down 11% from 2025.

Buybacks, dividend and net cash
Shareholder returns kept pace with the spending increase. In the third quarter Baytex bought back 24 million shares, 3.4% of shares outstanding, for C$149 million at an average C$6.18 a share. It also paid a C$16 million dividend of C$0.0225 a share. The C$165 million total exceeded free cash flow of C$139 million.
Net cash was C$522 million at Sept. 30, down from C$566 million at June 30. Total debt was C$91 million of long-term notes.
Since the sale of the U.S. business in December 2025 and through Oct. 30, Baytex has bought back 91.7 million shares for C$527.9 million, or 12% of shares outstanding, at an average C$5.75 a share. The third-quarter average price was higher.
A Normal Course Issuer Bid allows purchases of up to 70.9 million shares, 10% of the public float, from July 2, 2026 to July 1, 2027. For 2027, Baytex has set aside C$150 million for buybacks, about what it spent in the third quarter alone. It can adjust that to market conditions. It expects to keep the annual dividend at C$0.09 a share, subject to board approval.
Why it matters
OptimistFi has argued that Baytex creates value if its assets keep generating cash through the cycle and management uses the stronger balance sheet only for economic barrels and shareholder returns. The release supports that view. Baytex raised spending and growth targets from a net cash position while keeping the buyback and dividend running.
The quarter's cash came at strong prices. WTI averaged US$85.79 a barrel in the third quarter, against US$64.93 a year earlier and the US$70 mid-cycle price behind Baytex's target of a 15% annual total shareholder return.
The outlook is also a forecast. The release says actual results will vary from guidance and lists commodity prices and drilling success among the risks. It adds that buybacks and dividends are at the board's discretion and are not assured.
What's next
Baytex hosts a conference call on Nov. 6 at 10 a.m. AT (11 a.m. ET) on the results and the new outlook. Shareholders of record on Dec. 15 receive the C$0.0225 dividend payable Jan. 4, 2027.
The nearest hard test is fourth-quarter 2026 production of 72,000 boe d, which the filing says equates to unchanged annual guidance of 71,000 boe d. A miss would weaken the case that higher spending turns into growth.
Baytex also targets a final investment decision on the Gemini thermal project in the second half of 2027. The three-year plan will be updated if it goes ahead.
