What happened
CenterPoint Energy, Inc. (NYSE: CNP) raised its 2026 profit guidance and enlarged its 10-year capital plan to meet rising Greater Houston demand.
The plan grows by $4.0 billion to $70.7 billion, up from $66.7 billion. CenterPoint also moved $1.5 billion of investment forward into 2026-2030. It says this supports rate base growth of more than 14% a year through 2030. It kept additional capital opportunities of at least $10 billion through 2035.
Guidance rose too. CenterPoint raised its 2026 non-GAAP EPS range to $1.90-$1.92 and set 2027 at $2.07-$2.09. It expects non-GAAP EPS growth at the mid-to-high end of a 7% to 9% annual range through 2030.

The quarter behind the guidance
Third-quarter GAAP net income was $331 million, or $0.50 per diluted share, against $0.45 in the third quarter of 2025. By OptimistFi's calculation, net income rose 13.0% from $293 million a year earlier. Non-GAAP EPS rose 6.0% to $0.53.
Growth and rate recovery added $0.09 per share versus a year earlier, and weather and usage added $0.03. Operations and maintenance expense was flat.
Two items pulled the other way. Higher financing expenses cost $0.04 per share. The company ties them to new debt and equity dilution. Other items cost $0.05, mainly because the year-earlier quarter had a one-time tax optimization benefit that did not repeat.

Why it matters
OptimistFi has argued that CenterPoint creates value when regulators let it earn on the spending needed to keep its Texas-centered networks reliable. A larger plan with faster rate base growth feeds that argument directly. The filing strengthens it.
The guidance is steady rather than spectacular. The company calls the 2026 range nearly 9% growth over 2025 delivered results. OptimistFi's calculation against 2025 non-GAAP EPS of $1.76 puts the $1.91 midpoint 8.5% higher, inside the 7% to 9% range.
The capital plan is 6.0% larger than before by OptimistFi's calculation. Rate base growth above 14% sits well above the EPS growth range. So the question for holders is how much of that investment turns into earnings after financing costs.
CenterPoint also expects the growth to drive about $5 billion in savings for Texas residential and commercial customers over the next decade. That is the company's own forecast. The filing lists managing project costs and their effect on customer affordability among the risks to the plan.
What could limit the plan
The non-GAAP outlook excludes ZENS-related items, mergers and divestitures, TEEEF impacts, impairments and other unusual items. In the third quarter, the gap between GAAP and non-GAAP EPS came from a $19 million after-tax charge for temporary emergency electric energy facilities (TEEEF) units removed from rate base. ZENS-related items largely offset each other.
The filing's risk list includes CenterPoint's ability to fund planned capital and recover its investments on time. It also names delays or cancellations in large-load customer connections, including failure to win ERCOT approval into Batch Zero. Financing costs already weighed on the quarter.
What's next
CenterPoint hosts its earnings call on Oct. 27 at 7:00 a.m. Central time (8:00 a.m. Eastern). It also filed its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended Sept. 30.
The case strengthens if growth and rate recovery keep outpacing financing costs, as they did in the third quarter. It weakens if that balance flips.
