What happened
Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CDNS) raised its sales forecast again, but kept less operating profit from each dollar of quarterly revenue. Demand for its chip-design tools is growing. Its reported costs are growing faster.
Third-quarter revenue rose 22% to $1.633 billion from a year earlier. Non-GAAP costs and expenses increased 30.2% to $913 million from $701 million, according to calculations from the company's CFO commentary.
The October 26 results put the tension in plain view. Cadence now expects about 21% revenue growth for 2026, its third increase this year. Yet both its GAAP and adjusted operating margins fell from a year earlier.

Why it matters
The demand case remains strong. Backlog reached a record $8.2 billion. The company expects $4.2 billion of remaining performance obligations to become revenue over the next 12 months. Management attributed broad product growth to momentum in AI-driven designs.
Those orders offer visibility into future sales, but do not guarantee a particular profit margin. Non-GAAP operating margin fell to 44.1% from 47.6%. GAAP operating margin dropped to 26.2% from 31.8%.
Acquired-intangible amortization and restructuring weighed more heavily on GAAP results. Both are excluded from adjusted figures, which also showed a margin decline. The pressure therefore cannot be explained solely by those accounting adjustments.
Non-GAAP earnings per share rose to $2.11 from $1.93, while GAAP earnings per share stayed at $1.05. Investors can recognize the demand growth while still asking how much of it reaches profit.

A smaller recurring share does not mean fewer renewals
Recurring revenue accounted for 79% of quarterly sales, down from 82%. That is a revenue-mix measure, not a customer-renewal rate. Recurring revenue itself grew 18%, so the dollar base expanded even as its share declined.
Up-front revenue accounted for the remaining 21%, compared with 18% a year earlier. The useful distinction is between the timing and mix of sales and evidence that customers are leaving. These figures establish the former, not the latter.
Cash flow provides a counterweight
Operating cash flow rose to $424 million from $311 million. After capital spending, free cash flow was $362 million, up from $277 million.
Cadence repurchased $400 million of shares and authorized another $2.5 billion for future buybacks. Authorization is spending capacity, rather than a completed repurchase. Management expects approximately $400 million of additional purchases in the fourth quarter.
What's next
Full-year revenue guidance is $6.387 billion to $6.417 billion, up from $6.26 billion to $6.34 billion. Adjusted earnings guidance rose to $8.37 to $8.43 per share.
For the fourth quarter, the company expects revenue of $1.695 billion to $1.725 billion and a non-GAAP operating margin of 44% to 45%. That margin range remains below the prior-year quarter's 45.8%.
The next test is whether rising sales begin to outpace cost growth. Meeting the higher revenue outlook would confirm demand; improving the margin would show more of that demand reaching operating profit.
