Why it matters

OptimistFi's case is that Peoples Bank's local North Carolina deposit and lending relationships can keep turning modest balance-sheet growth into earnings and book value without adding much credit or funding risk.

Net interest income rose by $4.1 million for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, from $43.66 million to $47.76 million. That gain came as interest income increased by $2.7 million and interest expense fell by $1.5 million, according to the release.

Core deposits were $1.44 billion, or 91.90% of total deposits. Total deposits rose to $1.57 billion from $1.51 billion at December 31, 2025. Asset quality held steady on the main measure. Non-performing assets were $4.3 million, or 0.25% of total assets, the same ratio the company reported at December 31, 2025.

Book value per share also rose to $29.63 from $28.15, which fits the case's focus on compounding.

The weaker points were clear too. Non-interest income fell to $20.3 million from $21.3 million, and the provision for credit losses rose to $1.1 million from $585,000 as loans grew $98.6 million. Management also linked part of the net-interest-income gain to Federal Reserve rate cuts from September 2025 through December 2025 and a $58.7 million decline in time deposits since December 31, 2025.

What's next

The next quarterly report will show whether the bank can keep loan growth, deposit growth and margin expansion moving in the same direction.

If the company preserves the 3.85% margin and steady credit quality, that would strengthen the case. A softer deposit mix, a lower margin or a larger provision for credit losses would weaken it.
