Alpha Metallurgical (NYSE: AMR) posts preliminary Q3 loss

What happened

Alpha Metallurgical Resources, Inc. (NYSE: AMR) said preliminary third-quarter 2026 results point to a $9.3 million net loss.

The company also expects a net loss of $0.73 per diluted share and $29.4 million of Adjusted EBITDA.

Coal revenues were $560.6 million. Non-GAAP coal revenues were $474.1 million, and 3.9 million tons were sold.

Third-quarter net realized pricing for the Met segment was $121.09 per ton. Non-GAAP cost of coal sales was $106.93 per ton.

Alpha said stronger volumes than in the first half helped, but continued cost pressure and market volatility hurt realizations.

The company said it spent about $3.0 million to repurchase roughly 18,000 shares during the quarter.

As of September 30, 2026, Alpha had total liquidity of $443.4 million. That included $334.1 million in cash and cash equivalents and $184.3 million of unused ABL availability.

That was partly offset by a $75.0 million minimum required liquidity threshold.

The company also said it had no borrowings and $40.7 million in letters of credit outstanding under the ABL, with total long-term debt of $10.6 million.

Why it matters

OptimistFi's case is that AMR is a cyclical option on metallurgical-coal cash flows. That makes pricing, volumes and cash generation more important than one quarter's earnings line.

This filing is mixed. It shows a loss, but it also shows positive Adjusted EBITDA and a large liquidity cushion.

OptimistFi's calculation leaves about $300 million of the $1.5 billion share repurchase authorization unused after roughly $1.2 billion of repurchases since the program started.

The board authorized up to $1.5 billion for repurchases, so the buyback still matters for how Alpha uses cash.

The filing says timing and amount depend on market conditions, the stock price, legal requirements and debt agreements.

The pro forma figures are preliminary, and the release says they may change before final results.

What's next

The company plans to release definitive third-quarter 2026 results before the market opens on November 6, 2026.

Alpha expects a conference call at 10 00 a.m. Eastern time that day.

The final release will show whether the preliminary net loss, Adjusted EBITDA and liquidity figures hold.

A final result in line with this filing would support the current read. A weaker result or softer cost commentary would weaken it.
