What happened
ASML Holding N.V. (NASDAQ: ASML) just showed that AI-driven chip spending is reaching its factories, not merely its order book. Third-quarter sales rose to €11.662 billion, gross margin reached 57.5%, and management said planned supply for 2027 and 2028 may not fully cover customer demand.
That changes the immediate assumption from whether the equipment ramp will arrive to how quickly ASML Holding N.V. (NASDAQ: ASML) can deliver it. The company previously described a 30% capacity increase for 2027 and was studying another 30% increase for 2028. It is now exploring more 2028 capacity beyond that plan.
Why it matters
The before-and-after is unusually clean. Sales increased 25.0% from €9.326 billion in the second quarter. Gross profit increased 33.1%, from €5.035 billion to €6.700 billion, and gross margin expanded 3.5 percentage points.
Gross profit growing faster than sales is the useful result for investors. It supports the claim that ASML Holding N.V. (NASDAQ: ASML) can turn scarce lithography capacity and installed-base demand into operating leverage, rather than buying growth with lower margins.
System volume did much of the work. New-system sales rose to 113 units from 86, while used-system sales increased to eight from five. Installed Base Management sales, which include service and field options, climbed 19.1% to €3.289 billion.
The strongest counterargument is also inside the release. Customer demand forecasts and interest in 2029 or 2030 orders are not recognized revenue. If ASML Holding N.V. (NASDAQ: ASML) cannot add capacity without supplier delays, cost pressure or quality problems, the demand signal may stretch across more years instead of lifting near-term sales.

What's next
The evidence strengthens the investment case, but it does not remove execution risk. Management expects fourth-quarter sales of €14.2 billion to €15.2 billion and a gross margin around 57%. The midpoint implies another 26.0% sequential sales increase.
Watch whether ASML Holding N.V. (NASDAQ: ASML) reaches that range while holding margin, then whether it publishes a funded 2028 capacity plan. Missing the sales range because of supply constraints would weaken the near-term case even if customer forecasts remain intact.
The company’s demand comments are forward-looking and may change with customer capital spending, export rules or the semiconductor cycle. This is an evidence update, not personalized investment advice.
