The students of the Thurgood Marshall Pre-Law Society gave a significant donation to the Holiday Care Package drive, a drive that helps the less fortunate in Chester County.
Last Monday, the Thurgood Marshall Pre-Law Society made a presentation to Laurie Szoke, and Maria Navarrete-Olvera of Penn State's Cooperative Extensive office.
Szoke and Olvera both work for the Holiday Care Package drive during their time off from Penn State.
"This is our vacation when we are not working at Penn State," said Szoke
Holiday Care Package began in 2004.
"The goal of this organization is to get teens involved to learn about the community and help families." said Olvera
Szoke and Olvera said that Chester County is considered a "hidden community, " because little attention is focused on families with children who lack the simple necessities needed for survival.
"We allow the flow and energy from others to help build bridges." said Szoke, who was grateful to have the participation of Lincoln students.
Families who are in need are given a box full of items ranging from clothing, household items, baby items, toys and food the week before Christmas. Szoke and Olvera said that they get to know all of the families who are recipients of Holiday Care Packages.
In order to receive a Holiday Care Package, families may have reached out on their own, or have been referred on a confidential basis through a social worker or other outside source.
The Thurgood Marshall Pre-Law Society is an organization at Lincoln University and other universities that prepares undergraduate students for law school. The group is also responsible for increasing Lincoln's involved in increasing Lincoln's presence in the surrounding Chester County community.
Tyrone Daye, a senior and vice president of the Thurgood Marshall Pre-Law Society said that it's important that Lincoln students give back.
"We can't forget about the ones who don't have as much as we do," he said.
The organization collectively decided to donate to this particular project because of their flexible timelines in accepting donations.
Brittany Harry, the secretary of the Thurgood Marshall Pre-Law society made the presentation to Szoke and Olvera. According to Harry, they received donations from students and purchased items to give.
"It is a good start for our organization. First comes community service," she said.
Jakia Woods, the president of the Thurgood Marshall Pre-Law Society agreed:
"We really wanted to be apart of this community" said Woods.
Holiday Care Package is still collecting donations. From now until the week before Christmas, donations can be dropped off at the Aven Grove Library.
