Students representing various major congregated for one purpose: to give back to the neighboring community.

The students arrived at Allen AME and served a pre-Thanksgiving meal to residents in the Oxford community.

Rev. Juanita Hall-Walters urged students to partner with the church to combat some of the area's most vexing problems. "We need your help," said Walters, who added that the Oxford community is suffering from a serious drug epidemic. As pastor of the church , she is actively trying to reach out into the community and wants to partner with Lincoln. She said that she wants to begin a Community Choir which she hopes will include students from Lincoln University.

The service learning project then turned into a service of Thanksgiving when Walters asked several students to render a rendition of the congregational hymnal, "This is the Day"

Walters issued a charge to the men.

"You are responsible for the women on this campus. You have to be a covering for them," she said.

Many students walked away from the day of service feeling refreshed.

Lincoln People For, the student-run community service organization was responsible for organizing the community service project. The organization's president, Re'Becca Benoit, was optimistic about the day-long event.

"We are the leaders of the community so we should be out there giving back," she said. "We need to know other people in the community; after all, we live here too."
