In front of a packed audience, Jessica Jones, a senior stood up and made a declarative pronouncement. "My name is Jessica Jones and I am a homosexual."
Jones, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., organized her third annual homosexuality forum titled "Alternative Lifestyle Editions."
After Jones declared herself a homosexual, the crowd reacted with oohs and ahhs and some were left speechless in shock of her blunt honesty. Once the forum started, it was like everyone was eagerly waiting to either share their opinions on homosexuality or to seek out more information to better educate themselves.
"Why do you feel people choose an alternative lifestyle?" one panelist asked. Students stood up and raised their hands feverishly in an effort to reply to the inquiry. Some responded that same sex couples are more in tune with each other's emotions.
Alexis Newman said that she is disturbed by the animosity that gays and lesbians face on campus.
"It's wack…there's too much he said, she said and people are defining themselves by their sexuality," said Newman, who is a homosexual.
Jones said that she was pleased with the forum and said that she hopes that the event will continue in years to come.
"We dealt with issues that the campus keeps in the closet," said Jones. "People left feeling that they were educated about taboo topics."
