Lincoln women's soccer team ends season

What some may call a rough season, with a record, of 2-11-5, the accomplishments of the women's soccer team subdues the losses of the 2007 season.

The team scored 25 goals, instituting a new school record for most goals in a season. The preceding mark was 20, which was set by the 2006 team. Adding to the achievements were freshmen Chiamaka Opara and Shaynita Blanchard, who tied the school record for most goals scored in one season by an individual player with seven each.

The only other woman to score seven goals in Lincoln's history was Tia Redden, in 2005. Francine Taylor, the women's soccer coach, finished her fourth year at Lincoln and is excited about the future.

"There is a lot of potential and we are maturing everyday," Jefferson said. "I'm already looking forward to next season."

The team has proved their maturation by winning their first game against Valley Forge Christian College in the school history. Simultaneously, the victory was Lincoln's first of the season, and it was a team effort. Sophomore Antonia Jones, a first year soccer player, scored two second half goals to help Lincoln earn its first victory, after recovering from an injury that kept her away from the game for the whole month of September.

The team is made up of a host of young players who have time to develop. Despite the struggles, sophomore Leslie Jefferson understands that she plays on a young team and sees the bigger picture which shows her growth as a young player.

"We have a lot of potential and are learning everyday," Jefferson said. "We can only go up."

Through hard work and practicing on the basics, the women's soccer team will be a team to look out for in Division II in the years to come.
